As seen in recent news, there have been an increase in spontaneous glass breakage within households. With the rise of these incidents happening, especially with shower screens, take that multiplied by the number of people living in your home, I am already shuddering at the thought of it.Why does this happen and what can we do to prevent it?

So, what is Tempered Glass?

Tempered glass is standard glass that goes through an additional manufacturing process called ‘quenching’, which is essentially heating it up to extremely high temperatures, then cooling it rapidly with high pressured air. Kind of like tempering a knife. This process makes it 4x stronger than standard glass, but at the same time, drastically altering its breakage pattern.

Standard glass breaks into big pieces, while tempered glass breaks into thousands of tiny glass shards.
Additionally, nickel sulfide, a common impurity found in glass, expands, and forms micro-cracks during the quenching process, which causes the glass to shatter without warning. (CNA, 2021)

How can we avoid this?

While you may be thinking of removing all glass shower screens and doors in your home, there is a way to protect your loved ones from injuries. Safety Films can be installed on your existing glass panels, preventing those tiny glass shards from flying and harming those around it. 3M Safety Film uses 3M adhesives to hold the shards together, as one big panel, for it to be safely removed in the event of spontaneous glass breakage.
