Can you get sunburnt at home?
Mar 9 2023 Sophia
You might think that you only need to wear sunscreen while lounging on the beach or when outside, but do you need to wear sunscreen at home?
Next time you are sitting by your window, you might consider putting on some sunscreen to prevent skin damage.
Sunlight is made up of different wavelengths of light. One of which is familiar to us all – ultraviolet – also known as UV light. There are three types of UV light; UVC, UVB, and UVA.
What is UVC, UVB, and UVA?

- UVC has the most energy, but it is blocked by the ozone layer and does not reach us.
- UVB has mid-range energy. Some of it goes through the atmosphere and makes it to Earth, reaching us. UVB has the right amount of energy to interact with our skin, which causes UV damage to our skin cell’s DNA, resulting in sunburns.
- UVA has the lowest energy of the three. As UVA has yet to interact with any molecules in the atmosphere, it penetrates deeper into our skin, reaching the inner layer of our skin, causing irreparable damage. This means that most of the UV exposure that you are exposed to is from UVA.
All in all, UVC has no effect on you but both UVA and UVB are bad for you. Although they don’t work in the same way, they both break important cellular bonds and increase your risk of skin cancer and premature aging.
So, can I get sunburnt at home?
If you are behind glass, the glass can block some of the UV rays. Most glasses are capable of breaking UVB light. And since UVB is the main cause of sunburns, you are probably not going to get burnt sitting by the window unless you spend a very long time there.
BUT, do not celebrate too early! There is another caveat. Though UVB does not pass through regular glass, UVA does. UVA can reach your skin and cause severe skin damage. UVA is the cause of almost all forms of premature skin aging, including wrinkles, and also damages the collagen and elastin in your skin.
What can I do to prevent this?
By adding a solar film to your windows, UVA will be blocked because it is able to interact with the tint on the film. For those without window films, doctors, dermatologists, and health agencies have recommended to apply sunscreen even while indoors.
Given what we have just learned about windows, it seems like a good idea to cover your home windows with solar films to protect you and your family from the damaging effects of UV exposure.
